Burlesque with Ella Pusskins

Hello and thank you for chatting to Scare Waves Tell us who you are and a little about what inspires you?

Hello, youre more than welcome, I am Ruby Rebelle, a Burlesque Performer with a little added sideshow! I come from Gosport, Hampshire

What was your first glimpse in the world of burlesque?

My first glimpse of Burlesque came when a friend of mine told me that she was doing body confidence lessons and wanted to perform. I had heard of Burlesque before and decided I wanted to learn a bit more about it, my friend suggested I took lessons myself but not having a lot of spare cash and no way to travel to them I decided to teach myself! Still to this day I have had no lessons, everything is self taught!

Do you remember you first show on stage?

Of course! It was my own show! I had organised a show in Southampton to raise money for a Breast Cancer Charity and debuted in it, I remember having to be pushed onto the stage by another performer, I was just so terrified! I was performing my Forces Sweetheart routine and was dressed in an old army uniform. When I was on stage I realised how much I loved it, I got such a thrill! Well, The rest is history now!

Can you tell us about your main acts?

The acts I perform most are my sideshow acts, Fire eating and glass walking. I love performing acts that have that danger aspect! I love being able to watch the audiences reactions!

What creative process takes place when thinking up and putting together one of your routines?

It all depends really, sometimes I hear a song and a whole routine pops into my head, other times I start with an idea for a costume or prop and have to find the music to go with it.

How has performing burlesque changed your life?

More than I could ever imagine, Performing has given me something to focus on and work towards, Next month (November) I will have been performing for a year, to think what I have achieved in this year is crazy, I have gone from just a normal retail sales assistant to a fire eating, glass walking performer! Burlesque has also changed my personal life, I met my partner Daniel through him seeing me at a show, To think if I had never started performing I wouldnt have him!

How hard is it arranging your own events, it must get quite stressful?

It does get stressful but when you see what you have achieved after you know its all worth it. I get a great deal of pride when I see what I have managed to produce over the last year! I have surprised myself a great deal! I never used to be able to organise anything!!

Now for us horror fans, whats your favourite scary movie?

Oooh, well.. Its a toss-up between the Saw films and anything based on true events (like serial killer films, not ghosts!)

What can we expect to see in the future from Ruby Rebelle?

More Glass, more paraffin, some rusty nails and lots more glitter!

Thank you for giving us your time

Any last words? Well, I hope to see you soon! Check me out at Facebook
