Welcome to the street!!!
Hi, who are we speaking to and how are you on this fine day?
I'm Travis Broyles - professional tattoo artist from Everett, WA. I'm doing great!
How long have you been tattooing?
I have been tattooing professionally for about 4 and a half years. I got my start while I was still in high school, and finished my apprenticeship shortly after graduating. I've been tattooing full time ever since.
Where do you tattoo?
I currently work at Sunken Ship Tattoo in Everett, WA. (http://sunkenshiptattoos.com) Its a great shop with a very vintage nautical feel to it. The shop is huge, and we have a vintage clothing store attached to it as well. It's pretty rad!
What turned you on to tattooing?
For the most part, tattooing just fell into my lap. I'd gotten my first one at the age of 17, and shortly there after, I was learning how to do it. I had figured that since I was not planning on going to college, and had no life long plans - then it would be a good experience for me to get into. Upon learning, I fell in love with the art and everything that goes along with tattooing and the industry.
Do you have a specialist or favorite style?
I'm really into doing American Traditional, Neo Traditional, Black and Grey and anything else with a lot of color. My personal style seems to fancy dark shading, and bright colors.
What are your influences?
Sailor Jerry, Mike Malone, Paul Rogers, Chris Garver, Brandon Bond, Joe Capobianco and etc. All of those tattoo artists not only do amazing work, but they all have or had a huge work ethic. At some point or another, each of those artists were pushing the standards for tattooing - some of which still are. I'm always highly inspired by anyone who works hard, and lets no one get in their way.
Have you tattooed anyone famous?
I have had the honor to tattoo Michale Graves (ex singer of the Misfits and etc) on two separate occasions in 2008. I have also tattooed JV Bastard (Mister Monster, Doomsday Prophecy, Darrow Chemical Co., Michale Graves and etc) multiple times. I've also tattooed members of such bands as The Epidemic, The Coffin Caddies, Teen Wolves, The Repomen, Hades Machine, The Greengoes, Church for Sinners and etc. There is a strong relationship with tattooing and music to me, so I love tattooing bands!
Any advice for people wanting to get into tattooing as a job?
Give up the life that you know, and go for it. Find a good tattoo artist that's work is beyond amazing, and get tattooed by him. Bring your artwork and talk to them. A good apprenticeship will cost, and will last a long time - but its worth it. Tattooing is an amazing job, and there is a lot of money to be made in time. Prepare to bust your ass! Tattooing is definitely not a job in which you can be lazy! Sleep, eat, breath, and live nothing but tattooing - never give up - and you'll do extremely well.
How else do you spend your spare time?
I run a horror based record label by the name of Robot Monster, Inc. ( http://robotmonster.us) Between tattooing and running the label - there isn't too much time left in the day! I also do web design, graphic design, screen printing, fine art, and etc. I've got a few other business's that I'm trying to get started, that have been on the back burner for a few years. One of which is an all horror based clothing company, called Phantom Creature Clothing and Apparel. Keep an eye out for that in 2010!
